Laying pipe with a mini crawler excavator requires precision to create a trench with the correct depth, width, and bottom condition. Begin by excavating a trench slightly wider than the pipe diameter. Use a grade laser inside the trench to guide the mini crawler excavator's bucket and create a consistent slope (fall) for drainage. For a stable base, carefully shape a "vee" or flat bottom in the trench and add a layer of sand or gravel. 

The mini crawler excavator's thumb is invaluable for gently lowering the pipe into place without damage. During backfilling, use the mini crawler excavator to place select backfill material around the pipe in layers, avoiding large rocks that could cause point loading.
